Health Insurance for a Latvia Residence Permit: Rules

Published: 2026-07-24 · Updated: 2026-07-24 · CORVUS Attorneys-at-Law

A Latvian residence permit requires a medical insurance policy from a local insurer — approximately EUR 50 per person per year — for every applicant, every year the permit is held. It is the least expensive obligation the permit carries, the easiest to satisfy, and one of the more common things to get slightly wrong: the operative word is local, and the operative rhythm is annual.

We are CORVUS, an attorney-at-law office in Riga. The complete rules fit on one page — here they are.

What the Requirement Actually Asks

A local insurer's policy. The requirement is satisfied by a policy from a Latvian insurer — which cuts both ways. The exotic international health plan that costs forty times more doesn't automatically tick this box, and the applicant who arrives with premium worldwide coverage but no local policy has an unmet condition; conversely, the standard local product satisfies the rule at roughly EUR 50 a head. Many families sensibly hold both: the local policy for the permit, whatever else for their actual healthcare preferences.

Issued fast, needed twice over. Policies are issued electronically within a day — our clients typically have quotes in hand before the final trip is even booked — so this is never the document that delays a case. It appears at the initial application as part of the document package, and then again at every annual registration, where a current policy for each family member is part of the conditions being confirmed.

Per person, no exceptions. The investor, the spouse, each child — every cardholder carries their own policy. For a family of four that's about EUR 200 a year: a small line, but a permanent one, and it belongs in the long-term budget alongside the registration fees.

The One Way It Goes Wrong

The lapse. A policy quietly expiring mid-year costs nothing until the registration visit, where the check for current coverage finds none — a EUR 50 gap casting a shadow over a quarter-million-euro investment, the definition of a false economy. The fix is administrative, not financial: one calendar entry that ties policy renewal to the registration date for the whole family. Our standing clients never think about this at all, because the quotes arrive alongside the registration reminders — which is precisely how a EUR 50 formality should live: handled, invisible, never news.

Insurance, fees, registration dates — the permit's annual rhythm fits in one managed checklist. We run it for standing clients at a fixed fee.
